Here is what some of our participants are saying........

Meet Carla she just ran her first marathon after training with us this summer.....

Two years ago, I never would have dreamed of running a marathon. I’d flirted with running in the past, but not consistently or with any goal in mind. My husband and kids were the athletes in the family, not me.

When I went into Fleet Feet for the first time in December of 2009, I was looking for clothes to wear while running on the treadmill and while hiking Mount Peak. Like many people visiting a running store for the first time, I was worried that the staff would look down at me, a novice. How wrong I was! Kendra put me at ease right away and I left the store with the right gear and renewed resolve.

When I made the scary/exciting decision to run a marathon, I realized that a training plan I found online would not cut it. I had often stopped in at Fleet Feet to ask questions, find the right shoes, and so on, and knew I was in good hands there. Just registering for their marathon training group made me breathe easier every time I started to freak out at the thought of running 26.2 miles. If the Fleet Feet coaches said I could do it, who was I to argue?

Running with the group on Saturdays throughout the summer and early fall was fun and empowering. We received personalized training plans that taught us about pacing and how far to push our limits, and coaches were there to guide us and give us tips along the way. No one ran alone. We were all considered “real runners,” regardless of pace, because we are!

So as I lined up for the start of the Portland Marathon in October, 2011, I was well-trained, injury free, and in the company of some great friends I made through the training program. Sure, I had some pre-race jitters, but no real anxiety. The training group had built up my confidence and I knew I had this thing. My goal was to finish the marathon with a desire to do another, and I succeeded. I am a marathoner!
